Happy 2012
12/28/2011 | 12:43 pm
Hi there lovely people,
2012 is upon us … wow … we made it! Our world is fearlessly changing everyday with every moment swiftly passing, sometimes unknowingly, yet it IS the unknown of what is next that intrigues us most. While so much is clear and easy, so much is not so. What lies beyond is our own. In peace … in love … anticipation or fear - we embark on this next journey with ease and enthusiasm for it is art which drives our community more than ever. Drives us to create, to improve, and to push us further in creating a place, which is real, and just; an ebb and flow so sure of itself that we can rely on this one very thing to motivate.
So here we are, one again; a new year unraveling and a new phase evolving. We want to thank every one of our SUMA supporters and artists … family and friends … who have helped us create space, time and time again. We are very grateful to have such a talented and vibrant community of people to work and play with. We are, indeed, looking forward to yet another year of antics and we most definitely hope to see you over the new year celebrations. While we will not indulge in throwing a NYE event this year, three of our SUMA artists – Zum One, Jonah K and Siren Sativa will be performing at CirQlar’s ”Trip the Light Fantastic” NYE Party in Toronto. Check out the event page HERE!
Much love and respect always,
SUMA

Dear friends,
As many of you are surely aware, recently we unfortunately lost two very dear contributors to our community. For those that have not heard, we thought it appropriate to notify everyone of the details.
Scott Watterworth – October 25th, 1982 – October 31st, 2011

Scott unexpectedly passed away on Halloween 2011 from a heart attack at the age of 29. Scott was a vibrant and dynamic artist who along with his partner Mike Exner contributed in many ways to our community and events over many years. Scott was integral in various lighting, deco and laser setups and installations that brought many events to another level. Scott touched many lives deeply in his short stay in this realm with his open heart, free spirit and embracing smile. Scott will be dearly missed by us all.
John Panagapka – January 9th, 1965 – December 5th, 2011

John passed from this world to the next on December 5th, five weeks after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. John was very active in the annual Summer Solstice festivals, as a coordinator and builder of necessary infrastructure, participating in and assisting with many other events and projects within our community. John had wisdom and character like none other. He shared his knowledge and joy with the world without expectation. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting John he most likely made a lasting impression on you.
Both of these men passed from our lives way before their time. We know that both of them would want us all to shine their light forward in our own lives as they did while living theirs.
Namaste

MO-INFO: Fall 2011: Thank You for Everything! Now Let’s Occupy the World!
10/13/2011 | 8:44 pm
Hello wonderful Suma friends and fiends.
The world is changing… be a part of it… OCCUPY EVERYTHING…. wherever you are….
Saturday, October 15th @ King and Bay in Toronto http://occupyto.org/ as well as many other cities near you! See you there and reclaim our streets and humanity.
Check out this video Occupy Toronto Day 1 Stop Motion

Before we talk about the future, we wanted to take a few moments to sincerely thank our crew and community for all the support!!! Without our close friends who LOVE, care and appreciate the work we do, and SHARE in the responsibility and work load, NONE of this would be possible… Sometime supporting us is as easy as sending an email, sharing an event posting or just showing up at our events and being a part of our vibrant and beautiful dance floor! Others of you RAISE the bar, by participating … whether it be music, video, hooping, documenting our events etc. etc. So THANK YOU, to ALL of you!!! Please get in touch and let us know what you think and what you crave, or what you hate…. always love to hear from you!!! info@sumantics.org
Our last big event, Dubtime, with the Mad Professor and Twilight Circus was a musical highlight for the Suma crew. For many of us, it might have been one of the greatest musical nights we have ever experienced…. and believe me, we’ve had our fair share of musical experiences…. We would really like to send a special THANK YOU to our many volunteers for the night and our uber talented and dedicated sound crew: Jon and Jen from 40hz who not only bring the most serious BASS around, they are also super awesome in every way (check out the pumpkin they carved for us last year with our logo! – OMG!!!) And of course … Kevin Park for tweaking and mixing and being the master of all things audio! We love you!
OK Back to the future….. Suma is proud to present::: SPOOKED on Saturday October 29, 2011.
This Halloween marks the third collaborative event between breakandenter and Suma… Each year we have teamed up with our good friends at bne and tried to plan an event that balances the best of our favourite techno artists with the best of dub break and bass – Halloween is a time to be with your friends dressed in the weirdest, wackiest costumes around and freak out in a safe and loving environment…. This year we have raised the roof, so to speak and have moved to an all indoor venue and booked the best of the best dj’s and live acts so that both rooms are guaranteed to get hot and steamy as the dancefloors erupt in the craziness only experienced on Halloween!!! See you there!

12/08/2010 | 3:47 pm

Suma has been crafting distinct events since 1998 and the common thread that binds us together time after time is LOVE. Love of art, love of community, love of dancing and, above all, the love of music!
After several collaborations, a year has passed since our last chakra event. We now look to the Heart Chakra, (Anahata or the unstruck sound), and we are reminded of the powerful message that resonates and pulses through pure soun d.
This Winter Solstice let’s celebrate once again and open our hearts to the pulse…

ABOUT SOME OF OUR FEATURED ARTISTS …
Nagata Shachu Taiko Group – TORONTO
*Watch their video
Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences across North America and Europe with its mesmerizing, heart-pounding performances of the taiko (drum) and other traditional Japanese instruments. Taking its name from founder Kiyoshi Nagata and the Japanese word shachu meaning group, Nagata Shachu masterfully combines unbounded spirit and passion with the highest levels of musicianship and discipline.
Arthur Oskan – TORONTO
*Listen to some of his remixes
Toronto Canada’s Arthur Oskan is known for his powerfully resonating dance floor releases.
Representing his stylistic range, Oskan’s productions have been released on a variety of labels including Beretta Music, Restructured, Secret Weapon, Cratesavers, and Matrix Records. Under his Myers Briggs guise, he’s recorded for such labels as Beretta Grey, Thoughtless Music, and Noah Pred’s Sentient Sound who subsequently released his widely successful track “Forever.” Not surprisingly, several of the world’s top dj’s and producers – Funk D’Void, Los Hermanos, Chymera, James Holden, Nic Fanciulli, Hernan Cattaneo, and Fabrice Lig, have given top praise for his past and current releases.
As one of Toronto’s leading live acts, Oskan has performed alongside such international artists including Omar S, Troy Pierce, Alex Under, and Someone Else.
Arthur continues to perform live and produce music for several labels throughout 2010, and is now working with Fabric London’s publishing arm to further grow his international exposure.
Spooloops – KITCHENER
*Listen to a live set
Spooloops is a live electronic music project of Ian James Newton, an artist whose creative output encompass music and contemporary art. Ian has coordinated legendary social interventions and interactive gatherings since 2000, mainly in his studio ‘Zero to One’, a multi-disciplinary art venue in Kitchener, Ontario. The music of Spooloops is an unexpected combination of booty shakin’ dance floor pleasure and deep space techno pop. He transports listeners through a kaleidoscopic journey, with zero gravity basslines where Detroit meets the Jetsons. His potent live sets are crafted using older mid-quality hardware; Roland MC505, Yamaha SU700, Korg ESX-1. Embracing the innate awkwardness and specific quirks of this gear adds a beautiful controlled loosness to the sound.
Recent projects include closing events and sound sculptures for for Kitchener’s Open Ears Festival of Sound and New Music and a live performance at mutek 2010.
Aerodromme – TORONTO
*Listen to a live set
Aerodrömme, a vibrant fresh Canadian act, was created by Boris “Shankar” Kurtzman and Steve Chan. The two members share strong passion for music. Steve Chan comes from a hard trance/full-on psy world with his established project Nexus7 while Boris Shankar arrives from a progressive/techno scene as a successful DJ for Tribal Vision Records. Aerodrömme’s sound can be described as a blend of progressive house and techno with elements of trance and electro. Within a year of its existence, Aerodrömme has released music on such prominent labels as Blue Tunes Records, Tribal Vision, Spiral Trax, Plusquam, Air Snare and Teggno Records; and received support from heavyweights such as Wehbba, Perfect Stranger, Re-Zone (Toolroom Records), NASA, Astronivo, Duca, John Deere, and Mapusa Mapusa, just to name a few.
Taal Mala – VANCOUVER
*Listen to a set
Often described as un-categorizable, Taal Mala’s music is inspired by new ideas and classic standards, and takes influence from a diverse selection of both new and classic sounds. Genre-defying acts of synth genius and production lustre form a solid foundation for Taal Mala’s destruction of any soundboy who comes to test it. Dubstep, Grime, Jungle, Acid, Hardcore and Reggae are all partially responsible for the fusion that is created. As a member of the SUB-OSC and Lighta! soundsystems, Taal Mala has buried an excess of tin pan soundboys alongside The Bug, Kode9, Loefah, Venetian Snares, Rusko, Benga, Skream, Hatcha, Youngsta, Martyn…etc.
NiKO – GUELPH
*Listen to a Dj set
NiKO aka Nick Coghlin has been heavily influenced by all styles of music since childhood. Spending upwards of 10 years studying classical and jazz piano, Nick took on new challenges that in no way, his traditional musical training could prepare him for. Having been playing various genres of electronic music over the years, his love for dj’ing has been consistent across the board with no end in sight. Currently set on making a name for himself in the Toronto dubstep scene, NiKO has been working in the studio to bring out his own style that separates him from other dime-a-dozen djs and producers. Working in the studio with Ill.Gates, he is ready to have his original works heard by the masses with some tunes already getting played abroad by Toronto’s Ill.Gates (Muti Music) and local support from 40Hz frontman, Spyne. Having played alongside Heyoka, Mutt, Spyne, Jonah K, Rollin Cash, and the Dubslingers crew, NiKO can’t wait to see who he’ll share the dj booth with next. With big plans in the future including a weekly internet radio show on Dubplate.fm and a music review/news column on brokenbeat.ca be sure to hear more original works, mixes and live shows from this bass music advocate!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Dub Gabriel
Producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, Dub Gabriel has been pushing the boundaries of rock, dub, world and electronic music for over a decade. His musical explorations in Brooklyn in the mid 90’s drew him to the outer limits of the New York scene where he got his start as a DJ at the legendary Limelight. His genre-bending style and hard-hitting sets launched him as a trailblazing figure in the New York underground club scene and gained him the attention of leading publications including Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine who hailed Dub Gabriel as “one to watch” in New York City.
Fast-forward to today and Dub Gabriel continues to build on this legacy in everything he does – whether it’s creating genre defying original music, remixing projects or throwing down slamming DJ sets. Most recently he has collaborated with Michael Stipe on a track for the album Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy, which also features tracks from Thom Yorke, The National, Mercury Rev and Frank Black. This is his second collaboration with Stipe – the first one being for Dub Gabriel’s 2008 album, Anarchy & Alchemy. The album has garnered critical acclaim from leading publications Pitch Fork, New York Magazine, The Wire and CMJ, with Exclaim Magazine naming it the “Best Dance Album of the Year”.
In between working on his upcoming fourth studio album; which features collaborations with a diverse crew of legendary artists that include U Roy, David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets), members of Gogol Bordello and many others; 2009 has seen Dub Gabriel dropping remixes for Balkan Beat Box (J Dub), Raiz (Universal) and a soon-to-be-released remix for the uncompromising No-Wave pioneers, Suicide. Staying true to his multi-cultural roots, he is also working on a side project with Bachir Attar & The Master Musicians of Jajouka, which will culminate in both a studio release and a live touring project. If all of that isn’t enough, he continues to stay busy composing for TV & film and has written music for MTV, VH-1 and Nickelodeon, as well as scoring an upcoming feature film staring Bradley Cooper.
As a DJ, Dub Gabriel is much in demand on the international club circuit dropping sets alongside other genre defying DJ’s and artists that include, Kode 9, DJ Craze, Banga, Bomb Squad, Jazzanova, Scientist and Meat Beat Manifesto. He is a regular guest at Francois K’s legendary Deep Space night at Cielo and has even held down sets at Givenchy’s runway show during China Fashion Week in Beijing, Puma’s World Cup party in Berlin and the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Bell Ceremony at the United Nations!
Pezzner
To all but the most literate of electronic music buffs, Seattle’s Dave Pezzner may seem like a relative newcomer to the house and techno community. His debut Pezzner album, the much heralded ‘The Tracks Are Alive’ dropped on Freerange in 2010, following a spate of releases on the label since 2008. Subsequent releases on Om Records and Urbantorque, as well as remixes for American staple labels Mothership and Ghostly International have projected Pezzner once again on to the worldwide stage.
However those that have been watching and listening long enough have probably already discovered his work as one half of West Coast house duo Jacob London, noted for releases going back ten years on the likes of Doubledown and Classic Records. For 16 years he cut his chops with partner Bob Hansen, creating eccentric house and break beat rhythms.
Pezzner’s own work could be said to be more serious, with an abstract artistic sensibility, lofty percussive themes and intentions to create hypnotic soundscapes for the body as well as the brain. ‘The Tracks Are Alive’ is a 13-track walk-through of his organic sounding style, in full dance-floor mode traversing with ease between disco, house and techno.
Featuring heaps of brand new productions, remixes and originals, his live set has taken him to the far reaches of the dance music globe from the festival stages of Montreal’s Mutek Festival and Movement Festival in Detroit, to the DJ booths of renowned clubs like Cielo in New York, and Space in Ibiza. The recent completions of hugely successful European and Australian tours signal the launch of his critical assault on the wider global circuit.
Sassmouth
Sassmouth settled in Chicago from San Francisco via New York City in 2000 where she rapidly reoriented her life to the weekly rhythm of electronic dance music culture. Using her musical training and diverse experience performing live as both a member of string quartets and punk bands, she aggressively attacked the techno question throughout the first decade of the millennium. Sam’s DJ sets reflect her love of dialectics – a tribute to her early explorations into musical yin and yang. Stripped down sounds mutate into jacking funky house, punchy techno, and beautiful sub bass lines and melodies.
Sassmouth found a musical kinship with like-minded Chilean artists while living in Santiago. She continues to return to her past residence to perform at the techno centre, La Feria. Upon returning to Chicago, Samantha performed regularly throughout the U.S., promoted a variety of underground and club events in her home town, and built a friendly and supportive online home for the electronic dance music community with her website naughtybadfun.org. Sam also continues her standard commute to beloved Detroit where she gained great inspiration and experience playing at club events and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.
Sam, now working out of her creative base in London, regularly contributes original tracks and remixes to projects for the Detroit-based label Hej Records while continuing to play dates in the Americas and Europe. Sassmouth, always the social being, is currently working on musical joint efforts with Jason Dunlap of Chicago, djing back to backs with the Punisher of Detroit, and as ‘Pimpi Vampi’ with Chilean partner in crime, Ivan Stipicic.
